The 'Sermon on the Mount' is a very big teaching. Jesus is coming to talk to us and to teach us what God wants us to to. This will be told in many different ways and it will be our job to uncover the hidden message and apply it to our own lives.
There are three main teachings that Jesus is going to preach about. These three things are The Beatitudes, The Our Father, and The Golden Rule. The Our Father:
Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our trespasses as we also have forgiven our trespass 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. The Golden Rule:
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." |
The Sermon on the Mount has 3 different types of meanings, these three are Literal, Modern, and Historical meanings.
The literal meaning to the 'Sermon on the Mount' is very simple. It means that Jesus is going to come and talk to a group of people on a mountain. The historical meaning is that the people that Jesus spoke to a long time ago knew the 10 commandments that God gave Moses on Mt. Sinai. - They grew up believing that God was frightening and would punish them if they did not behave in a certain way. - He calls God father of Daddy when he teaches people to pray the Our Father. - Jesus teaches people how to treat each other so that they will be happy. The modern meaning is more so a question for us. The question is 'How can we take Jesus' message and apply it to our own lives?' We as humans can do this in many different ways. The main way to do this is to listen and follow what Jesus teaches us. Jesus wants us the listen and act out what he has taught for the good and glory of God. We can try and follow the Beatitudes by being the peacemakers, by being pure in heart, and by being merciful. If you try and follow this, God sees your intensions and your heart and he will reward you. By praying the Our Father everyday we are following Jesus' instructions. Jesus says 'Pray like this'. These three words mean a number of things. Firstly, Jesus is encouraging us to pray, and he is also showing us how to pray. The Our Father is a prayer for forgiveness. If we pray this constantly, God will continue to forgive us and help us. The Golden Rule goes above any other rule. The rule is 'To love one and other as you would love yourself.' If you try and act this out in your everyday lives, God sees your heart and he will reward you. Your reward may not be a reward of material, earthly things, but it might be a reward between God and you in heaven. The Beatitudes:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. |
